Cathedral Notre Dame de Laon
The situation of Laon, on a hill that dominates the surrounding plateaus, has always given it a role of stronghold. Towards the beginning of the 6th century, the city became a bishopric thanks to the intervention of Saint Remi, a native of Laon. The first cathedral dated from the 9th century and was restored around 1113 after destructive riots.
The construction of the Gothic cathedral is envisaged around 1160. Laon is therefore one of the first Gothic cathedrals (after Saint Denis, Sens, Noyon, Senlis and contemporary of Notre-Dame de Paris). The nave was completed at the end of the 12th century, the towers of the transepts in 1225. The facade was completed in 1245.
